Sourdough Starter Recipe

The whole reason I started on this Sourdough journey is because my husband remembers his grandmother making fresh sourdough for him as a child. He remembers the smell the taste and even where she kept her starter. I thought to myself I’d love for him to experience that again, and for my daughter to experience that special feeling of homemade bread in the oven. So here we are. The easiest starter I could find on the throws of the internet.

Sourdough Starter Recipe:

Ingredients:

1/2 cup room temperature water

3/4 cup All Purpose Flour (I used King Arthur

All Purpose Flour)

Directions;

Stir the mixture vigorously and then cover. I prefer these Weck canning jars because they have a perfect lid for starters. No need to seal them just place the lid on top.

Place the starter in a warm spot for 24 hours.

After 24 hours you need to feed your starter.

Feed 1/2 cup of flour and 1/4 of room temperature water. Stir vigorously and then scrape down the sides of the jar.

After 48 hours you’ll probably see some bubbles. It’s time for another feeding. But this time you’ll need to discard 1/2 of the starter before feeding. Otherwise you’re going to have way too much on your hands.

After discarding half. Feed it with 1/2 cup of flour and 1/4 room temperature water.

You’ll do this every day for 7 days. By then your starter will be ready to use for your long awaited Sourdough loaf. When it’s getting very bubbly and doubling its size it’s ready to use. It will be smelly and very stretchy in texture. This is good!!

If your starter is left at room temp it will need to be fed every 24 hours. If you aren’t baking every day then you can keep it in the refrigerator. Once you take it out of the refrigerator initially to use, leave for one hour and feed it. Then feed again in 12 hours. After it’s out for those 24 hours you can then go back to feeding it every 24 hours like before. Just think of it as you’re trying to wake it up with feedings. It’s alive so feel free to name it. I did 2 starters when I first started just in case something went awry. Their names are Merle and Earl.

And remember this is fun! Don’t stress! It’s not as hard as people make it out to be.
