DIY Abstract Glass Ornaments

This was such a fun Christmas DIY project. It was also very therapeutic once you get into it. It took me a good three hours to do 12 ornaments. I had been looking for the right color blue ornaments for awhile without any luck, so I decided to get creative and paint some myself. I just love the look of these DIY Abstract Glass Ornaments.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Glass ornaments with removable tops

Acryllic paint

Mod Podge

Velvet Ribbon

All you do is open the cap of the ornament and squeeze in the paint into the top of the ornament and let the paint flow down the inside of the ornament. There is no rhyme or reason to how I dispersed the paint. I love that each one is different. I used 3 different paints for this project. It took me more time trying to mix the right shade of blue than to actually paint them. I just took one of my white paints and started adding a little blue and a little black and then I’d shake up the bottle. Just do a little at a time to find your right shade. I knew that there wasn’t an acryllic paint out there that was the perfect shade so that’s why I mixed my own custom shade.

I started experimenting a little with one of the ornaments just to see what would happen if I added mod podge after the paint. The result was a cool marble effect. You certainly don’t have to do this step because they are so pretty just using paints. You can also use glitter if you want to get super festive! My mom also did this project with my nephews and their glitter paint ornaments looked so cool.

You can use the base of the ornament container to dry the ornaments upside down. I kind of rotated them every 15 minutes or so just so they could have different flows each way around the ornament. You’ll notice they will drain a good amount of paint out of them, so feel free to re-use that paint. I just carefully scooped it up with a small paint brush and gently brushed it back into the top of the ornament.

They took a good 24 hours to completely dry. You can then add another personal touch with some special ribbon. These would make the cutest personalized gifts too. If you are having a dinner party this Holiday season you could give these to your guests to take home as a special surcie.
