Robin’s Egg Blue Door

It was 11:30 pm the other night and I got the overwhelming urge to paint our basement door the same blue from our last house. I just loved that robin’s egg blue door so much, and felt like I needed something very similar back in my life. Luckily we have a round door leading to our basement that I thought would be the perfect place for a pop of color!

Here’s what she looked like before. Still so beautiful. I felt like if I didn’t like it blue I could easily paint it back. That’s the beauty of paint!

I started looking for other blue paints to be inspired by, but I honestly I think this Robin’s Egg Blue by Rethunk Junk is my perfect shade of blue. It’s got just a slight twinge of green to it and it’s not overly blue. It’s juuuust right!

So I geared up for the hot sticky southern September weather (91 degrees 51% humidity) and set out with my paintbrush in hand. I decided to paint while our door was in the shade. I don’t recommend painting doors when they are super hot. So be sure you start your project when the sun isn’t directly on the door.

I’m not one for much prep work when it comes to painting. I did take a damp microfiber cloth and wiped down the dirt off of the door before painting. I let the door dry for about 20 minutes before going in with the first coat. This door is very old, so I knew that getting the hardware off of it was just not happening. I took a small detail brush to paint around all of the hardware. I did end up taping off where the brick met the trim so I wouldn’t get paint on the brick. But other than that I just went for it.

Prep Work

I have another previous door painting tutorial here if you’d like to read more in depth.

I painted two coats letting each coat dry 30 minutes. This paint covers like a dream and I highly recommend it! You can find out how to purchase it here. I’m going to let the paint cure for a good 48 hours before putting a top coat on it, so it will hold up with the elements. I recommend doing this for high traffic areas.

Be sure to watch my quick time-lapse video below!

I’m so happy with the way it turned out. It’s just the pop of color that this courtyard needed.

Thanks for flying by friends!

xoxo,

Robyn
