How to Paint Doors with Fusion Mineral Paint

Hey friends and happy Transformation Tuesday! I hope y’all had a wonderful weekend. If you follow me over on Instagram and Facebook you saw that I recently painted the outside of our front door using Fusion Mineral Paint in Soap Stone. So today I’m going to give you a few tips on how to paint doors with Fusion Mineral Paint to achieve that flawless finish.

Step by Step guide to Painting Doors

Step 1: Tape off any surfaces that you don’t want to get paint on using painters tape. Also be sure to lay down a drop cloth underneath your door so you don’t get paint on your floors or porch.

Step 2: Wipe down your door with a damp microfiber cloth. Using a microfiber cloth is essential anytime I’m prepping a surface because they don’t leave behind any fibers. Allow the surface to dry for about 15 minutes before applying paint.

Step 3: Start with the edges or outlines if you door has them. As you can see I did all of the creases of my door first. Don’t use a ton of paint on your brush either. I like to smooth over these surfaces again before moving on to ensure that there isn’t a collection of paint in the creases.

Step 4: Apply a thin coat of the paint at first. Remember less is more when it comes to this paint. You can always go back with an additional coat. For this particular color (Soap Stone) I only had to use one coat. I was shocked! It’s that good people!

Step 5: Details. I always leave the detail work last. Some may do it first, but I’m super impatient and just want to see the color on the door! If your door has a window don’t fret if you accidentally get paint on the glass. You can easily go back with a razor blade and remove that paint. As for my door, it has a small window with 4 panes so I ended up using a small angled detail brush to really be sure I got all the edges. I didn’t tape off the window. I was just very careful with my small paint brush and took my time. I went back with a razor blade after the paint dried and it chipped away very easily.

Step 6: Allow your paint to dry for at least 30 minutes before adding any additional coats. This paint does dry fast, but I like to allow it to be dry to the touch before adding another coat. It was rather hot here when I painted the door so it dried very fast. I left it cracked open for at least 30 minutes before fully closing it. Always check the weather before you do exterior doors. You don’t want a huge storm rolling up and ruining all your hard work.

Step 7: After you are finished painting take a plastic baggie or plastic wrap and place it over your jar before you screw the top back on. It will be much easier to get off next time you need it. Clean your brushes and admire your work!

Fusion mineral paint does make a product called TSP which is used for prepping your surfaces before paint. It’s essentially a degreaser that cuts down on any dirt or grime on the surface.

The Ultra Grip is another product they make that helps the paint adhere to super glossy hard to grip surfaces. So depending on the current finish of your door this also may help it adhere. My door wasn’t glossy at all. It was more on the matte side so I had no issue with the paint adhering to our door.

They also make a top coat matte poly for high traffic areas like doors or tabletops. It dries to a matte finish just like the paint. I didn’t use it for our front door because according to their website it can leave streaking with their darker colors. I think this would be best for their whites and lighter colors if you’re painting a table especially.

Overall I’m so pleased with the result! I am continually surprised by this amazing product. If you’re a beginner I totally recommend Fusion Mineral Paint. It literally goes on like butter! If you’d like to see my other Fusion Mineral Paint projects you can simply click here. Happy Painting!
