Wedgwood Jasperware Gallery Wall

I was drawn to Wedgwood Jasperware in lavender after I had the William Morris wallpaper hung in our dining room. I thought it was a nice compliment to the design and motif of the room. Almost a year ago I started collecting these small trinket dishes so that I could frame them out and create a gallery wall with my collection. Last April my collection started with Josiah Wedgwood and the Tower of London. Creating custom art for our home has been very important to me. I think that art expresses your style and is a true reflection of you, so wouldn’t you want it to be personal and unique to you and something not every has.

I have found most of these trinket dishes either on eBay or in local antique stores. They aren’t very costly, and are really fun to try and hunt down. If you are looking for them just be sure you’re not getting the ashtray dishes. You’ll notice the ridges in the dishes if they are ashtrays, and they are just a smidge smaller than the trinket dishes. Unless you don’t mind framing an old ashtray. I narrowed it down to 9 total dishes that I wanted to hang up for the gallery wall. I did have a few of the celedon color dishes, but decided to just stick to the lavender for the gallery wall.

Custom framing can be quite costly so I took to Michaels and purchased their 9×9 shadow boxes. You can buy a pro pack set of 8 to save a few dollars. Then I just purchased one extra so I would have 9 total. I went with the blonde wood so that the frame didn’t take away from the actual dish. I also thought it was a nice compliment to our wallpaper. They do have a variety of frame colors to choose from. I’ll include the other options below.

I tested out some hot glue on the back of a dish just to see if it would peel off easily if I ever wanted to remove it, and it did. So I didn’t feel guilty adding glue to the dishes. I figured this would be the best option to not damage the dish. I don’t plan to use these in the future in any other way than as art, so I felt good about proceeding with my plan. If the glue somehow comes loose over the years, I can always go back and glue it again. The beauty of the shadow box is that if it does come un-glued from the backing it won’t fall far and break.

So I simply added some hot glue to the back edge of the plate and a little on the very cetner, and then centered it on the linen backing of the frames. I let them cure for 24 hours before putting them back in the frames.

I am a little nervous to hang them to be quite honest. I am writing this blog before that scary part. There’s just something about putting nails in wallpaper that scares me, which is why I haven’t hung anything on it for almost a year.

I figured the easiest way to space them out properly was to create a paper template. You can just use craft paper or old wrapping paper if you have it. Trace your frames how you want them placed, then measure where the nail will hang and mark that spot with a dot. Hang the template on the wall and then nail in the nails where you see the dot you marked on the template. Take the template away and then hang the frames. I did this with our plate wall in the kitchen and it worked very nicely.

I spaced the frames out about 3 1/4 inches away from each other. I also measured up about 60 inches from the floor to find where to start my first frame. This is a good rule of thumb. Because this room has 12 foot ceilings it’s easy to try and go high with your artwork, but I wanted to start it just a smidge lower so that you could really enjoy it at eye level if you’re passing by. I could probably still add 3 more to the top if I decide to expand my collection.

Thank you for flying by to check out my Wedgwood Jasperware Gallery Wall. It’s been such a fun project that I’m so happy to finally have completed. I was so nervous to hang on wallpaper, but I got over my fear and just went for it. You could really use these frames to display anything special and sentimental to you. I just love the way they look.
