Garden Shed

I never thought I would get so excited over a little shed in my life. But man, was I so anxious for our little garden shed to be delivered. The whole reason we decided to get a shed is because Chris is converting our garage into a home gym, so we needed extra storage for all of our lawn equipment to be stored during that whole process. After a lot of virtual building online I finally was set on a design for the shed.

Design:

The overall goal of the shed was to make it look very similar to the look of our house. White with black shutters and lots of windows. We could have of course just picked one out on a lot that was already built and had it delivered, but we took the opportunity to go a bit further and custom build it with the options we desired so it will last a lifetime.

Here’s a little rendering I created to get an idea of how it would look in our yard.

Size:

After taking proper measurements of the placement we decided that a 12 x 20 was the way to go. I almost went with a 10 x 20, but after seeing them in person I thought that 2 extra feet really made a huge difference. If you are buying a shed in your area be sure to see them in person to get a feel for the size.

Additional Features:

I chose a few additional features that truly do give it more of a cottage vibe than a shed vibe. My favorite feature by far is the cupola. I told the delivery guy that it was just the icing on the cake. He of course just laughed at me. I’ve been on the hunt for a cool weather vane to go on top.

We also went with a dormer window for additional light and character. Our house has similar windows on the front and side doors, so I wanted to mimick that same look for the shed. The front doors were very important to me. Instead of the standard barn type doors you see on most sheds, I went with 9 lite window double doors to give some additional light into the building. I plan on storing plants in here during the winter, so I wanted to be sure there was enough sunlight for them without it being an actual greenhouse. It will also come in handy when sewing seeds as well.

Vinyl siding was also an important feature with the shed because it has a double lifetime warranty. It’s also super easy to clean as well.

Here’s a shot of it being delivered…such a funny thing to see moving through your yard.

Future Plans for the Garden Shed:

We do have a lot of plans for this garden shed including brick skirting to make it secure underneath, so no silly rodents make it their new home. Right now it is placed on blocks in order for it to be level in our yard. So no need to worry…it will look better soon. Our house has brick skirting, so I thought it would only be fitting to match the garden shed with that same look as well.

Since it was delivered yesterday I’ve got a tug to go and buy some flowers for the window boxes. That is definitely a priority this weekend for sure! We of course will be adding some brick stairs to match the skirting to make it easy to get into.

The interior is outfitted with electrical already which is a huge plus. The previous owners of our home had a small playhouse in the yard very close to where our shed sits now, so there is an electrical line that we can tie into already underground.

Landscaping:

Once the skirting is finished we will do some landscaping around the shed as well. I’m still working on a sketch of those plans. I want to take note of the sunlight out here during the Summer months to be sure I’m choosing the right type of plants. Eventually we would also like to add a white picket fence around it to make it a proper garden area. It would also be a perfect spot to relax and let Kato roam around while I work in the garden. Once we are finished with the garage renovation, then we can tackle that off of the wish list. That’s the goal.

I can’t wait to share more. This is just the beginning. Thanks for flying by sweet friends!
