DIY Large Letter Board

Hey y’all and welcome back. If you’re new…welcome to my nest! I’ve been dying to do this DIY Large Letter Board project for quite sometime. We are redoing our basement and I thought it would look amazing down at the base of our stairs. I’m really happy with how it turned out and I can’t wait to share how I did it! Let me know in the comments if you know where this quote is from. Extra kuddos to you!

I went and picked up some fencing caps from Lowe’s . These caps have the perfect grove already cut into them since they are mainly used for lattice fencing. All I did was walk over to the cutting service area and asked them to cut down them down so that I would have 4 separate caps all of which were 4 feet long instead of 8 feet long.

I then sanded them down to get rid of any sharp edges before staining them. I used our favorite Minwax stain in Dark Walnut. I just used an old dish rag to apply the stain. In order to get in the grooves I applied the stain with a small sponge brush to really get in those areas and then I wiped away the excess. It was hard to get in those groves even with a regular brush, so the sponge brush did the trick. I only did one coat of stain and let them dry for 24 hours before I hung them up to be sure they were fully dry.

I didn’t want huge screws going into our walls in case I messed up so I just attached these sawtooth hangers to the back of the boards. I like these because if you need to move the boards to the left or right you can do so without having to move your nail. I put them closer to the end of the boards all at the same width.

As for the letters…well we had to do some hard core research on those because they can get quite expensive. I mean we don’t have a light up marquee sign at a business, so we didn’t want to get crazy! Chris ended up finding them on eBay for under $60. We decided to go with the 8 inch letters to really make an impact, and I’m so glad we did! If you’re wanting to do this project on a smaller scale they do have 5 and 6 inch as well.

It’s so hard to take these photos without showing you the rest of the basement, but that reveal should be coming very soon I promise! We should be wrapping it up within the next two weeks fingers crossed.
