Basement Plans

Hey y’all and happy Friday! In collaboration with my husband, we have decided to revamp our basement. When we moved in to our house almost three years ago, the basement had been refinished to include a full kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living area. Of course there are some finishes that we wouldn’t have chosen ourselves, but now we can change it to reflect us. That is the beauty of design right?!! Here’s a little mood board I created to give you a snippet of what we are going for.

So as you can see it’s going to be a more modern take on the farmhouse style with the scale tipping more to the modern side. The first thing to go was the floor. Before, it was a faux cork floor. It was very difficult matching anything down there with that particular color on the floors. Here’s a look at it before. Not completely terrible, but it definitely put limits on what you could do for sure.

We had a flooring company (not to be named yet) come in and put in a laminate floor. We chose Applewood in the color “Frosted Coffee”. It’s a nice grayish-brown laminate floor with really nice texture to it. Our carpet on the stairs leading down to the basement are a taupe color so this was a good accent to the carpet. We still want to incorporate darker wood tones so we didn’t want it to be completely cool toned. I think this is a nice balance of both gray and brown,

Here’s a little sneak peek of the floor in front of the kitchen.

Once the project is done I’m going to be sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly so don’t you worry. If you’ve done any work to your house you know nothing ever goes right completely. And this floor is one of them. So stay tuned for that!

We are going to do one color on all the walls. Most likely a cool tone white. I will probably write a whole other blog on just picking the right white. Who knew there were so many to choose from?! I think we have narrowed it down to three, but who knows, that may change. Right now there are at least three different colors down there, so I think its going to make a huge difference when everything is just one consistent color. We think the right white will really brighten it up down there! We are also going to switch out the warm lights with LED, and that will make a big difference as well.

As far as the kitchen goes, the only thing we are changing is the tile backsplash. It’s definitely not our style, so it’s gotta go. We will probably do a standard beveled subway tile with darker grout for a different look than our kitchen upstairs.

I don’t mind the butcher block counters or the cabinet pulls, it’s just the backsplash that’s throwing us off. With a nice clean white backsplash I think it will really make this area pop! Here’s what we have now. Again it’s not terrible, just not our style.

The bedroom does not currently have a door, so we want to have a sliding barn door custom made to fit this doorway. That way we can technically classify it as a bedroom since there is indeed a window and a closet in there as well. It’s going to have to be bigger than this one shown below since the doorway is much larger, but you get the idea. I really love the color of this one.

We also may do a shiplap accent wall in the bedroom. We have shiplap coming down the stairs so it would be nice to tie that look into the bedroom as well.

These are the main changes that we are in the process of doing. Of course I’ll be updating y’all on all the furniture and finishes that we choose as well. I plan on having Chris be a guest blogger for the reveal since this is his baby. My husband’s style is a little more modern than mine, so it’s been so much fun delving into this style.

Thanks for flying by friends! Have a wonderful weekend!

Robyn
