7 Quick Cleaning Tips

7 Quick Cleaning Tips

Robyn's Southern Nest

Hey y’all! Happy Friday! I have currently been obsessed with watching cleaning routines on YouTube. They are so motivational for me and have made me look at my cleaning routine in a different way. I weirdly look forward to getting the house clean now. I wanted to share 7 quick cleaning tips with y’all that I’ve been doing for the past 2 weeks. I also love cleaning with products that have amazing scents. It almost makes cleaning a reward since they make your house smell simply amazing! I hope you’ll find these tips helpful in some sort of way. Happy cleaning friends!

Cleaning Tip #1 Deodorizing Carpets

Before vacuuming my carpets I’ve been taking a small amount of baking soda in a bowl and mixing a couple drops of peppermint essential oil to the baking soda and then I sprinkle it lightly on my carpet before I vacuum. This makes your carpets smell amazing while deodorizing them. You can use any of your favorite essential oils. It doesn’t have to be peppermint. Thats just my favorite for a clean and fresh smell.

Cleaning Tip #2 Clean from Top to Bottom

This might seem like an obvious one, but in the past I’ve forgotten to do this. For instance if I’m cleaning the kitchen I wipe the cabinets and counters before cleaning the floors. That way if I have any crumbs or dust on the counters that fall on the floors I won’t be upset since the floors are always last to clean. Same thing with the bathroom. I like to clean the mirror and then then work my way down to the floors.

Cleaning Tip #3 Using Microfiber Cloths

I love using microfiber cloths when I clean because they pick up every little crumb when you’re cleaning. I usually just wet them down wring out the excess water and then use my favorite cleaner with them. They don’t leave behind any fibers and are also wonderful for appliances! My favorite multi surface cleaner is the Method All Purpose Cleaner.

Cleaning Tip #4 Use Disposable Disinfectant Wipes to Clean the Toilet

The toilets are my least favorite thing to clean, but obviously it must be done. I like using the Seventh Generation disposable disinfectant wipes to wipe down the toilet after I’ve scrubbed the inside with the toilet brush. That way you aren’t taking those germs elsewhere when cleaning the rest of the bathroom. After I’ve scrubbed the toilet with the cleaner I take the toilet brush and balance it in between the seat and the base, that way it can drip dry before putting it back in the holder, and you won’t have an excess of water in your toilet brush holder. Another tip is to buy toilet brushes for all your bathrooms. There is nothing worse than having to go from bathroom to bathroom carrying one toilet brush around just praying that none of the excess toilet water in the bottom of the holder gets sloshed around and on you. Yuck!!! When we first moved in to our house my husband was smart enough to buy 4 toilet brushes with holders from IKEA for each bathroom. The ones at IKEA are affordable and small so we can hide them directly behind our toilets that way they are out of sight and you don’t have to touch it.

Cleaning Tip #5 Spray a Shower Cleaner after each shower

I use this Method Daily Shower cleaner after each shower and it really cuts down on how often we have to deep clean our shower. Not to mention it smells amazing! I make sure to spray it in any nooks and crannies that might collect hard water stains or mildew.

Cleaning Tip #6 Watch a Cleaning Video on YouTube

Watch a “Clean with Me” type of video on YouTube before you get started. It will change your life! I promise you will get motivated in seconds watching someone else clean their house. It will only take 15 minutes of motivation and you will be inspired! Trust me! They also tend to have great music with them as well so you can clean while you watch in the background.

Here are a few of my favorite YouTubers for Cleaning videos:

Cleaning Tip #7 Add Some lemon essential oil to your garbage disposal

After I clean my sink using my bon ami powder I like to drop in a few drops of lemon essential oil to my garbage disposal to give it a nice lemony smell! The powder I use doesn’t really have a scent so I like to do this after I’ve scrubbed my sink. I typically use this to scrub brush on my porcelain sink. I like to do this deep clean at least once a week that way no stains build up on my sink. After I do the dishes each night I typically just use Mrs. Meyers dish soap and a cellulose sponge to clean it out. I get a lot of questions on how I keep my white farmhouse sink clean…and my answer is to clean it lightly daily and deep clean it once a week.  It’s kind of therapeutic to me in a weird way. We really don’t ever leave dishes in there for long and I really think that helps to not leave food and liquids that could possibly stain in there for long periods of time.
